As a performer, Rich K has played frequently at the Detroit International Jazz Festival, Comerica Michigan Taste Fest, the Michigan Jazz Festival, the Detroit Festival of the Arts, and the Marshall Field’s Day of Music at the Max. He has appeared on the “Mitch Albom Show” numerous times. Rich developed his art with players of no less stature than Wynton Marsalis, Billy Eckstine, Jon Faddis and Dave Samuels of Spyro Gyra. He has appeared live with top local luminaries Larry Nozero, Chet Bogan’s Wolverines, and the Jimmy Wilkins Orchestra; he has recorded with Sheila Landis and Motown Funk Brother Joe Messina.
As leader of the Brazil and Beyond band, Rich has enjoyed seeing his group’s latest CD, Sounds of the Holidays, named “Outstanding World Recording” in the 2006 Detroit Music Awards competition. In 2004, the group’s Beatles CD also received this prestigious award from the Motor City Music Foundation.
Rich, the teacher, is heavily involved in education as adjunct faculty at Oakland University, Henry Ford Community College, Schoolcraft College and Macomb Community College. He is on the private teaching list for schools in Farmington, Troy, Beverly Hills, Birmingham, Utica, Warren and at Detroit Country Day. He is adept at teaching double bass as well as fretted and fretless bass guitar (4, 5 and 6 strings) and is thoroughly grounded in classical, jazz, Latin, rock and blues styles. In 1994, he started The Basschool studio, and is currently publishing his own system of double bass and 6-string bass guitar instruction. In addition, Rich conducts jazz workshops around town.
