Members of the MCBQ have performed with many of the finest chamber ensembles including the Empire Brass Quintet, Spectrum Brass, members of the Canadian Brass, and Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, and have taught at institutions including The University of Michigan, The University of Toledo, and Western Michigan University. Experienced educators, recently ensemble-in-residence at The Boston University Tanglewood Institute, the MCBQ performs unique, specialized educational programs geared towards children, as well as concerts and presentations for adults in a variety of formats.
The MCBQ’s debut CD, Christmas Vespers, features the premiere complete recording of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer John Harbison’s Christmas Vespers, as well as new arrangements of familiar Christmas and holiday music. Recent premieres include Kevin Beavers’ Three Moods for Brass Quintet (commissioned by the MCBQ in 2009). Upcoming premiers include new works by D.J. Sparr and Joel Puckett. Detroit Free Press Music Critic Mark Stryker writes of the MCBQ’s “creative vitality” and “seamless and highly musical performances.” They were selected by City of Detroit Mayor, Mike Duggan, to perform at a small party for Vice President of the United States, Joe Biden.
