Vice President – Doug Cornelsen

Doug Cornelsen was elected to the Local 5 Executive Board in the year 2000 and to the office of Vice-President in 2003, in which capacity he still serves. For 36 years, concluding in 2012, he authored the column Symphony Corner, a regular feature of KEYNOTE, Local 5’s quarterly newsletter. Beginning in 2007, for six years Doug was founding chairperson of the Detroit Musician’s Fund, Local 5’s publicly-registered charitable organization.

Doug holds bachelors and masters degrees in music from the University of Cincinnati. During a term of military service, he was a member of the U.S. Marine Band in Washington, D.C. In 2012 he retired from a career of 42 years as Detroit Symphony second clarinetist. Other professional affiliations include the Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings and, since 2006, Opera Saratoga of New York State.
